Commentary on the age of narcissists, those flaunting their vulgar lives and fucking hashtags, like any of it matters.
'This is who I am!' is a body of work produced as a three-edition zine exploring self-image and self-presentation through a warts-and-all approach to self-portraiture. It pokes an accusing finger at the people who deserve our derision, at all times - the social media narcissists. Taking to social media, 'they' convince others (or is it themselves) that 'life' is better than it is. But it isn't. It's just normal. And probably shit.
This false-image pollutes impressionable young minds - where life imitates art, and leads to issues of negative self-esteem and self-worth. Despite the serious undertones, this work is humorous and brutal.
The project was photographed over a period of months in early 2018, with inspiration and research beginning in late 2017. The creative output of this work was Instagram-style artworks, attracting sneering commentary and insults. The resulting social media-style posts were used in the zine.
The work was shot on 35mm film as an affront to the highly polished and artificial nature of digital photography and smartphone app filters.
